Hemp Coffee

What seems unusual at first glance turns out to be a circular economy success story. Vepa the furniture factory, a specialist in sustainable furniture, and the coffee roaster Peeze have joined forces to give used jute coffee sacks a second life as stylish chairs and bar stools.

The collaboration between Vepa and Peeze fits perfectly with their shared goal: a waste-free world.

Peeze, an Arnhem-based coffee roaster known for its fair trade and high-quality coffee, receives its coffee beans in sturdy jute bags from sustainable plantations and cooperatives around the world. Given the large amount of beans roasted each year, a considerable amount of jute is generated. This organic packaging material now serves Vepa as a valuable secondary raw material for the production of new furniture.

Erik Luisman, Sustainability & Business Development at Vepa: ” The original Hemp chair from Vepa has been successfully produced for several years.  Thanks to the unique combination of hemp mats and the organic resin from Plantics, the material offers countless possibilities.  Now,  instead of hemp fibers, we use jute coffee sacks including the original print, which gives the chair an even more striking appearance.  The organic and circular aspect is of course completely retained!”

Rik van Paassen, sustainability manager at Peeze coffee roastery: ” We at Peeze are fully committed to reuse. For example, we are actively working on reusable packaging and refurbishing coffee machines.  It’s great that, thanks to our collaboration with Vepa, we have now found a circular solution for our jute sacks.”

The Hemp Coffee collection is an example of how circular cooperation and innovation leads to concrete solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future. What started with discarded coffee sacks ended up in sustainable, stylish furniture with a special story.

What is also very special about these chairs is that they are manufactured by Vepa itself at its production site in Emmen. This is in line with the values that Vepa attaches great importance to: in-house production, local job creation and guaranteeing consistent quality.
